Facebook start seeing business in crowdsourcing and files a patent for its crowdsourcing translation application. Facebook made wide use of its own customer base to translate its own interface in 60 languages.

Livemocha is a 3millions community of people connecting together to learn languages. In one year they now have people from 220 countries speaking over 100 different languages. May be this is not exactly a crowdsourcing example but by sure it is an other comfirmation of the wisdom of the crowds and how it enables new business modeles over the Internet.

Interesting interview with Ghassan Haddad, director of internazionalization at Facebook. He tells the story about how the number one of the social networks in few weeks with 230,000 contributors were able to add support for 56 new languages with elapsed going from two to three weeks. 

TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design), the famous conference series, started a crowdsourcing initiative, TED Open Translation Project,  to add subtitles to English-speaking talks.

As a now 42 languages, 909 translators and 322 published translations.
